January on a dealer's lot means three things at once: last year's models still waiting for buyers as the new model year arrives, a new-year sales event to fill, and tax-refund season a few weeks away.

It's also a year that starts from a high mark. Cox Automotive estimates that 16.3 million new vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2025, the best year since 2019, and it forecasts about 15.8 million for 2026, about 3% fewer. In a slightly smaller year, the shoppers who are already in market matter more, and so does being the dealership they think of first.

Why cars fit auto dealers

Car buyers do much of their research online, then visit the few dealerships on their shortlist. Your name on the street keeps you on that list. Rideshare, taxi and delivery cars drive the commuter routes, shopping centers and neighborhoods your buyers come from, all day, every day of the campaign.

There's also a simple fit: a car is the most natural place to advertise cars. A wrapped car on the road gets noticed. In Nielsen's 2019 Out-of-Home Advertising Study, 64% of U.S. residents 16 and older had noticed a wrapped-vehicle ad in the past month.

And in the back seat, people have time. A typical ride runs 18 to 30 minutes depending on the city, long enough to scan a QR code and look through your inventory.

The calendar from January to spring

  • Now through February: the sell-down. Clearing the outgoing model year while the new one fills the lot.
  • New-year sales events. The first big push of the year, usually across several weekends.
  • Auto show season. Many cities hold their auto shows between January and March, when shoppers come out to compare.
  • Presidents' Day weekend, February 14 to 16. One of the year's best-known sales weekends.
  • Tax-refund season, February through April. When many households have a refund on the way and a down payment in mind.
  • Spring service. After winter: tires, alignments, batteries and the first oil change of the year.

What each format does for a dealership

In-vehicle screens play your short video with a QR code to your inventory or service page in the back seat of rideshare and taxi cars, in the markets where screens are available. Add your dealership's address and a radius, and your ad plays only inside it, or run it across the metro.

Standard Wraps put your dealership's name on both sides of the car and the rear window. You design once on 1:10 templates, a professional shop installs it on every car, and the start date is at least 14 days after you submit. Submit this month and your wraps are on the road by early February, running two months or more, through Presidents' Day and tax season into spring.

Full and partial custom wraps turn the whole car into your brand, designed with Vugo for the cars on your campaign. Vugo recruits drivers for each wrap campaign in the metro you choose, from thousands of cars in its driver database, so wraps aren't limited to where screens are available.

Swarms bring your wrap campaign's cars to one place for the hours you schedule: the blocks around your dealership on a sales weekend, or the convention center on auto show days. Drivers are paid to bring their cars into the zone, and you see how many confirmed.

Programmatic mobile can follow up with people who visited your inventory page from the QR code, across other apps and sites, managed by Vugo, your agency or your own team.

Five plays for auto dealers

  1. The sell-down. Screens with a QR code to the outgoing model year's in-stock inventory, inside a radius around your dealership. Lead with the model and the event: "Last of the 2025s. See what's in stock."
  2. The sales weekend. For Presidents' Day weekend, schedule a swarm so your wrapped cars fill the streets around your lot from Friday afternoon to Monday, and run screens in your radius with a QR code to book a test drive.
  3. The auto show. Swarm the convention center on show days, when the people walking in are actively comparing, with a short web address or QR code on the wrap for the parking lot and the curb.
  4. Tax-refund season. From February, run screens with a QR code to your trade-in value or pre-qualification page, for shoppers who are ready to make a move.
  5. The service drive. Not every ad has to sell a car. A spring service offer with a QR code to book an appointment brings owners back, and service customers become the next buyers.

Payment and lease terms

Auto ads that state a monthly payment, a down payment or a number of payments can trigger federal Truth in Lending or Consumer Leasing disclosures, and states have their own dealer advertising rules. Your dealership stays responsible for its ad meeting those rules, so check with your compliance team or counsel before an offer runs. Vugo reviews every ad against its own Content Guidelines before it runs.

There's a creative reason to keep it simple, too. A wrap is read in seconds and a screen ad in a few more, so the model, the event and your name do more work than a payment and its fine print.

Before you start

A four-step plan under "A plan for auto dealers: Five weeks to a Presidents' Day weekend.": Week 1, pick the offer, sell-down, event or service; week 2, screens on the road, QR codes to in-stock models; week 3, wraps arrive, a Standard Wrap on every car; February 14 to 16, sales weekend, a swarm around your lot.
From the sell-down to the big sales weekend.
  • Pick the offer. A model, a sales event or service. One per ad reads best.
  • Draw the area. The towns and neighborhoods your buyers come from, as a radius around your dealership or the whole metro.
  • Set the dates. Around the sell-down, your sales weekends and the auto show, and at least two months for wraps.
  • Make the page work on a phone. Inventory, trade-in value or service booking, one tap from the QR code. A page only the ad points to lets your own analytics show what it brought in.
  • Decide how you'll judge it. Scans, test drives booked and service appointments.

Wraps are priced per car per month, screens by budget, and every campaign is quoted for its format, market and dates.
